Fat-Dissolving Injections vs. Injectable Contour Lifting: What Is the Difference?

If you are researching injections to define your face, you will often see terms such as fat-dissolving injections, contour injections, and contour lifting used interchangeably. Fat-dissolving injections reduce fat. Injectable contour lifting uses collagen-stimulating ingredients to support sagging contours and fill hollows. The right choice depends on whether fullness or sagging makes your face look wider.

How do fat-dissolving injections work?

These injections deliver medication into the fat layer to reduce fat cells. Deoxycholic acid (DCA), a naturally occurring bile acid, is a principal ingredient; it disrupts fat-cell membranes. A 2016 review described deoxycholic acid (ATX-101) as the only injectable approved in the US and Canada for reducing submental fat, with efficacy and safety demonstrated in several large phase III trials.

That approval applies to the area beneath the chin. A 2023 review of nonsurgical facial procedures also noted that DCA was well studied and FDA-approved for submental fat, but not studied for other facial areas. Its placement and dose therefore need particular care when used for cheek or jowl fat.

How is injectable contour lifting different?

Contour lifting does not dissolve fat. Collagen stimulators such as CaHA, PCL, and PLLA are placed in a planned pattern along areas that tend to sag first: the jawline, lateral cheeks, and jowls. A 2023 review of jawline injectables described HA, CaHA, and PLLA for jawline laxity and jowls, with short recovery periods. In a 2022 comparative trial, PCL improved nasolabial folds for up to 12 months; injection-site swelling, pain, and redness resolved within 30 minutes.

Injectable contour lifting often suits people troubled by jowls and sagging lateral cheeks who prefer to avoid facelift surgery. We select the ingredient for each face: CaHA or PCL where immediate volume is needed, and PLLA where gradual improvement in firmness matters more than immediate filling.

Comparing the two approaches

Their purposes, ingredients, and patterns of improvement differ.

Category Fat-dissolving injections Injectable contour lifting
Purpose Reduce fat volume Support sagging contours and fill hollows
Typical ingredients Deoxycholic acid and others CaHA, PCL, PLLA
Typical concerns Thick fat beneath the chin or in the cheeks Blurred jawline, sagging jowls, hollow lateral cheeks
How change develops Volume decreases over several weeks Immediate contour improvement supported by subsequent collagen formation
Points to consider Can cause hollowing where fat is sparse Excessive volume can look unnatural

Who is suited to facial fat-dissolving injections?

Reducing fat can suit someone with thick, pinchable fat under the chin or in the cheeks and reasonably firm skin. We do not recommend it when fat is limited but the jawline is blurred and tissue beside the mouth is sagging: further fat loss can create hollows or an older appearance. A 2021 review likewise emphasized careful patient selection and appropriate dose, session count, and injection technique for deoxycholic acid.

Patients often ask about contour injections because they are worried about hollow cheeks. If hollowing has already begun, we recommend restoring support and volume rather than reducing it.

When do contour-lifting results appear, and how long do they last?

Hollow areas are filled immediately after injectable contour lifting, followed by new collagen formation over 4–8 weeks to support the contour. We therefore recommend assessing the result again once collagen has developed. Duration varies with the degree of sagging, skin thickness, and lifestyle.

How does Dong-An Joongsim Clinic shape contours without fat-dissolving injections?

At Dong-An Joongsim Clinic, a doctor personally conducts your consultation and treatment. Your doctor first determines whether fat or sagging has changed your contours and, when sagging and hollowing are the main concerns, plans collagen-stimulating treatment.

Outline Contour Lifting uses CaHA, PCL, or PLLA selected for the jowls, jawline, lateral cheeks, and areas below the cheekbones. One patient who discovered this contour lift on YouTube later recommended it to others. Retaining Ligament Lifting reinforces key points in the facial retaining ligaments and connects these with broader support across sagging areas. It can suit patients seeking a lift from the temples through to the jawline.

Our main priorities are where to place the product and which direction to support. Hollow areas need filling, while sagging areas need upward support. Missing that distinction can make the lateral cheekbones look more prominent. Dr. Chang-Hwan Cho and Dr. Soyoun Koo were recognized as outstanding trainers in Merz's RADIESSE Train the Trainer program. Dr. Cho was first author of a 2026 Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology review comparing the mechanisms of six collagen stimulators. For a face with a thicker fat layer, we also consider devices such as ONDA skin tightening that deliver heat into fat.

What should you know before injection treatment?

Bruising and swelling can occur but usually settle within days. For about a week, avoid firm rubbing, saunas, steam rooms, and strenuous exercise. When sagging is widespread, follow-up RADIESSE for inner facial lines or Sculptra for overall firmness may be more useful than stopping after one treatment. Injections may not be enough for severe sagging; we discuss realistic expectations at your consultation.

Fat-dissolving and contour injections: common questions

How should I choose a contour-injection clinic in Apgujeong, Gangnam, Seoul?

Check whether the doctor first decides if fat reduction or lifting is needed, and personally plans and performs the procedure. At Dong-An Joongsim Clinic, near Apgujeong Rodeo Station, a doctor handles both your consultation and treatment.

Can contour injections cause hollow cheeks?

Injecting too much fat-reducing solution into a lean face can cause hollowing. Injectable contour lifting instead fills hollows and supports sagging areas, making it an option for people concerned about losing cheek volume.

Will contour lifting make my expressions look stiff?

We plan flexible support that does not interfere with expression muscles, so the face can move naturally when smiling or speaking.

What affects the cost?

Cost depends on the areas treated (such as the jowls, jawline, lateral cheeks, or neck), the ingredient, and the amount. Your doctor assesses your contours and volume before explaining the cost.
