UltraPulse is Lumenis’ fractional CO₂ laser. A fractional scanner directs narrow, high-energy columns into the dermis, building on the UltraPulse technology previously used for ablative resurfacing. Our clinic uses UltraPulse Encore with SCAAR FX for scar treatment under the name Scar Impact UltraPulse.

According to our clinic’s treatment materials, a single session may provide effects comparable to three or more conventional fractional CO₂ sessions, with less discomfort and a lower risk of post-treatment pigmentation. Results depend on the scar and treatment settings.

Smoother acne, surgical and burn scars

Depressed acne scars

Narrow laser columns reach the base of rolling, boxcar and ice-pick scars, disrupting disorganized collagen and stimulating new collagen to reduce their depth.

Surgical and injury scars

Makes surgical and traumatic scars smoother and more even in color. Deep, thick scars can be treated with SCAAR FX, the deepest-reaching mode.

Burn scars

Softens and smooths firm burn scars. In a study of 11 patients treated over ten sessions, all had improved scar scores and new collagen in the upper dermis.

Enlarged pores

New collagen supports the tissue around pores, reducing the enlarged appearance that can accompany scarring.

Fine & deeper wrinkles

Your doctor selects broad, shallow ActiveFX or narrow, deeper DeepFX treatment according to wrinkle depth.

Texture & firmness

New collagen forms as the skin recovers, improving rough texture and firmness.

Scar treatment planned by your doctor
A clinic whose doctors teach scar treatment

Results depend on planning and technique. At Dong-An Joongsim Clinic, a doctor conducts your consultation and performs the procedure, with time to assess your individual scars.

  1. Mode and depth selected for each scar

The laser offers ActiveFX, DeepFX, TotalFX and SCAAR FX modes. Your doctor assesses scar shape, depth and skin type before choosing the mode, depth and number of sessions.

  2. Clinical exchange with an UltraPulse expert

Dr. Matteo, an international UltraPulse Encore key opinion leader and scar-treatment specialist, visited the clinic to share techniques. He also discussed clinical practice with Drs. Cho and Koo in 2018.

  3. Teaching laser scar treatment at conferences

Dr. Koo lectured on UltraPulse scar treatment at the ASLS autumn conference in 2015. At the 2023 spring conference, Dr. Cho discussed UltraPulse in the context of international scar-treatment consensus guidance.

Acne scar results: a patient’s experience

I’ve seen a real improvement after three sessions

I had three sessions of UltraPulse laser and pulse toning for acne scars, and I’m seeing a real difference… My scars are only on my cheeks and temples, so I didn’t have my whole face treated. That may be why it didn’t hurt with just numbing cream.

How a CO₂ laser smooths depressed scars
Your doctor explains how it works

How can depressed scars improve? Narrow laser columns remodel the collagen within them. A doctor who teaches scar treatment at Korean and international conferences plans the depth for each scar.

Illustration of the skin and underlying tissue
  1. Microscopic laser columns

Narrow, powerful CO₂ beams create small channels deep in the dermis.

  2. Short pulses

Each pulse ends before much heat spreads sideways, limiting damage to surrounding skin.

  3. Collagen remodeling

Disorganized scar collagen is disrupted and replaced with newly organized collagen.

  4. Skin repair

The narrow columns leave surrounding skin intact to support faster healing.

Acne scar laser: questions about results, comfort and cost
Answers from our doctors

How do I choose an UltraPulse clinic in Apgujeong, Gangnam, Seoul?

With this laser, choosing the mode and depth for each scar is central to the result. Check whether a doctor conducts both the consultation and procedure, whether authentic equipment is used, and whether regenerative care can be added for your scar type. At Dong-An Joongsim Clinic, a doctor personally assesses and treats your scars.

What kind of laser is UltraPulse?

UltraPulse is Lumenis’ fractional CO₂ laser. We use UltraPulse Encore with SCAAR FX for scar treatment. Encore received US FDA 510(k) clearance in 2002; FDA documentation for the UltraPulse family includes acne and surgical scars among its indications.

How is it different from a conventional fractional CO₂ laser?

CO₂ systems differ in pulse delivery, including continuous-wave, superpulse and ultrapulse modes. Continuous-wave delivery spreads heat over a broader, shallower area, with more surrounding thermal damage, downtime and discomfort. Short, powerful UltraPulse delivery creates narrow, deep channels with less surrounding thermal spread. According to our clinic’s treatment materials, one session may be comparable to three or more conventional fractional CO₂ sessions, with less discomfort and a lower risk of pigmentation. Outcomes depend on the device settings and the scar.

Which scars can UltraPulse treat?

It is used for rolling, boxcar and ice-pick acne scars, as well as traumatic, surgical and burn scars. It can also address enlarged pores and wrinkles. In a study of 60 patients with traumatic or pathological scars, the UltraPulse Encore group showed greater improvement in tone and texture than the dermabrasion group.

Is UltraPulse painful?

We use topical anesthesia. Its short pulses can make treatment more comfortable than conventional fractional CO₂ resurfacing. If you are concerned about discomfort, we allow sufficient time for the numbing cream to take effect.

How much downtime should I expect?

The laser creates very narrow channels, followed by fine crusting and redness during healing. In a study of 20 Korean patients after one UltraPulse Encore treatment for acne scars, crusting lasted about a week and redness averaged 2.8 days. Recovery varies with mode and depth, so we discuss timing during consultation.

How many sessions will I need?

Your doctor recommends a course based on scar depth and extent. A study of 44 acne-scar patients used at least two sessions; another involving 158 patients with hypertrophic face and neck scars used three sessions at three-month intervals. Extensive, thick burn scars may require more sessions.

What determines the cost?

Cost depends on scar location and extent, the mode used, number of sessions and any additional regenerative care. Your doctor assesses the scars and explains the cost during consultation.
