Skin Boosters: How to Choose the Right Type
With so many skin boosters available, choosing one can be difficult. Ingredient and mechanism matter more than the brand name. For dehydration, we first consider hyaluronic acid. For thin skin and lost firmness, we look at products that reinforce structure or stimulate collagen.
How are skin boosters different from fillers?

Fillers create volume in a particular area; skin boosters distribute small amounts more broadly to improve skin quality. A 2024 review describes their development from volumizing HA fillers toward dermal improvement, with hydration, elasticity, and wrinkle reduction as the main effects.
How are skin boosters grouped by ingredient?
Common products fall into four broad groups according to their main ingredient and action.
| Category | Typical ingredients | Main role | When change appears |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hyaluronic acid | HA and high-/low-molecular-weight HA complexes | Retains water to improve dehydration and fine lines | From immediately after treatment |
| Regenerative ingredients | Polynucleotides (PN) and others | Supports recovery of stressed skin | Over several weeks |
| ECM boosters | ECM purified from acellular donor dermis | Reinforces the structure that supports collagen | From weeks 2–4 |
| Collagen stimulators | PLLA, PDLLA, CaHA, PCL | Stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen | Over 1–3 months |
HA works quickly, while collagen stimulators develop more slowly and last longer. We often combine them, using a stimulator for deeper support and HA above it to improve skin quality.
When do results appear, and how long do they last?
HA skin boosters can make skin feel hydrated immediately. In a 2023 randomized study, 107 participants receiving three HA-booster sessions had fewer fine lines around the eyes, neck, and chest at days 75 and 120 than a cream-only control group. Hydration increased 7 days after the final injection. Most adverse effects were mild and resolved within 48 hours. One HILO WAVE patient told us their skin looked hydrated and firm and that they enjoyed seeing it in the mirror.
A 2026 split-face trial compared human acellular dermal ECM particles with HA over 20 weeks. The ECM-treated side showed greater improvement in density, elasticity, wrinkle depth, pore area, and hydration.
How do collagen stimulators fit in?
They are the subgroup focused on collagen production. A 2026 systematic review of 14 studies found that PLLA and CaHA both improved elasticity, wrinkles, and facial volume. Effects lasted up to 25 months for PLLA and 12–18 months for CaHA. Common adverse effects were mild injection-site pain or swelling. One GOURI patient also said the effect became clearer with time.
Which booster suits my skin?
HA often suits tightness and dryness. We recommend HILO WAVE when you have little time for recovery, as normal activities can resume immediately. Following manufacturer guidance, we do not use it in the glabella or the thin skin around the eyes. For enlarged pores and thinning skin, we first consider ECM or collagen stimulators. GOURI may suit patients dissatisfied with hydration boosters alone; CaHA can add support where areas such as the lateral cheeks are hollow.
How does Dong-An Joongsim Clinic provide skin boosters?
At Dong-An Joongsim Clinic, your doctor personally handles your consultation and treatment. They assess skin thickness and hollowing before choosing the ingredient and layer. Even distribution is central: nodules often form where product accumulates, so we place small amounts across multiple points.
HILO WAVE uses a high-/low-molecular-weight HA complex for hydration and collagen support. Dr. Chang-Hwan Cho was recognized among HILO WAVE's Top Rankers for high treatment volume in the shortest period, and the clinic received a 2026 HILO WAVE USER TOP5 AWARD. As it is HA-based, nodules can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. Re2O reinforces skin structure with ECM. Injection can be uncomfortable, so we may combine it with the less painful HILO WAVE to reduce overall discomfort. GOURI uses fully liquid PCL to create a collagen network in the dermis. RADIESSE is a calcium-based collagen stimulator. Dr. Chang-Hwan Cho and Dr. Soyoun Koo were recognized as outstanding trainers in Merz's RADIESSE Train the Trainer program.
Dr. Chang-Hwan Cho was first author of a 2026 Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology review comparing six collagen-stimulator mechanisms. These distinctions inform how we select ingredients for each face.
What should you know beforehand?
Results vary with skin thickness, age, and lifestyle. Collagen stimulators take weeks to months, so begin early before an important event. If a photo shoot is coming up soon, we emphasize HA for immediate hydration. With a month available, we work backward from the date to stage treatment, including collagen stimulation. Tell us about local inflammation, pregnancy, or breastfeeding at consultation.
Skin boosters: common questions
How should I choose a skin-booster clinic in Apgujeong, Gangnam, Seoul?
Check whether ingredients are selected for your skin and whether a doctor handles both the consultation and the treatment. At Dong-An Joongsim Clinic, near Apgujeong Rodeo Station, your doctor provides both directly.
Are hydrating injections and skin boosters the same?
HA hydration injections are one type of skin booster. The broader term also includes regenerative ingredients, ECM, and collagen stimulators.
How many sessions are needed to notice a result?
HA often improves hydration from the first session. Re2O follows manufacturer guidance of three sessions 4 weeks apart; HILO WAVE patients often return after about 3 months. Your doctor adjusts the course to your skin.
What affects the cost?
Cost depends on ingredient, amount, area, and session count. Your doctor assesses your skin and the volume needed before we explain the cost.
